L’ouverture (As-Sarh)
1
7
Quand tu te libères, donc, lève-toi,
8
et à ton Seigneur aspire.

Sourate XCIV.
N’avons-Nous point ouvert ?
(’A lam našraḥ.)

      8
et, à ton Seigneur, aspire !

      The Expanding
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
      1
Did We not expand thy breast for thee
      2
and lift from thee thy burden,
      3
the burden that weighed down thy back?
      4
Did We not exalt thy fame?
      5
So truly with hardship comes ease,

      7
So when thou art empty, labour,
      8
and let thy Lord be thy Quest.

In the name of the most merciful God.
      1
HAVE we not opened thy breast
      a
Note [édition originale] : Have we not opened thy breast;] By disposing and enlarging it to receive the truth, and wisdom, and prophecy; or, by freeing thee from uneasiness and ignorance? This passage is thought to intimate the opening of Mohammed’s heart, in his infancy, or when he took his journey to heaven, by the angel Gabriel ; who having wrung out the black drop, or seed of original sin, washed and cleansed the same, and filled it with wisdom and faith1: but some think it relates to the occasion of the preceding chapter 2.

Triplicem invenio Suræ hujus Epigraphen ex primo versu illius desumptam : الم نشرح Nonne dilatavimus  ? الشرح Dilatatio  : الانشراح idem. Pręmium Lectori ipsemet Mahumetus constituit his verbis : Qui legerit Suram, Nonne dilatavimus : erit, ac si veniret ad me oppressum męrore ; & à tristitia sublevaret me.
        I.  Dilatavimus tibi pectus tuum. Vide hoc figmentum in Vita Mahumeti §. quarto, cùm adhuc esset puer.
II.  Et deposuimus à te pondus tuum. ] Ponderis hujus nomine intelligunt communitet Interpretes peccata Mahumeti. Vide, quæ alibi diximus.
        V.  Cùm difficultate erit facilitas. ] Idest, post adversa prospera advenient : &, ut exponit Gelal, post vexationes illatas tibi ab infidelibus succedet tibi victoria contra eos.
          R
          Note [édition originale] : REFUTATIONES.
