L’astre nocturne (At-Tariq)
1

Note [édition originale] : ’inna-hu « II ». Ce pronom représente évidemment Allah.
          9
          10
et où l’Homme n’aura ni force ni aide !
          11
Par le ciel doué de retour !
Note [édition originale] : Doué de retour n’offre aucun sens clair.

            The Night-Star
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
            1
            By heaven and the night-star!
            2
And what shall teach thee what is the night-star?
            3
            The piercing star!
            4
Over every soul there is a watcher.
            5
            So let man consider of what he was created;
            6
he was created of gushing water
            7
issuing between the loins and the breast-bones.
            8
Surely He is able to bring him back
            9
upon the day when the secrets are tried,
            10
and he shall have no strength, no helper.
            11
By heaven of the returning rain,
            12
            by earth splitting with verdure,
            13
            surely it is a decisive word;
            14
            it is no merriment.
            15
            They are devising guile,
            16
            and I am devising guile.
            17
So respite the unbelievers; delay with them awhile.

            The Morning Star

By the heaven and the Morning Star"
            2
            - Ah, what will tell thee what the Morning Star is!
            3
            - The piercing Star!

            5
So let man consider from what he is created.
            6

            7
That issued from between the loins and ribs.
            8
Lo! He verily is Able to return him (unto life)
            9
On the day when hidden thoughts shall be searched out.
            10
Then will he have no might nor any helper.
            11
By the heaven which giveth the returning rain,
            12
And the earth which splitteth (with the growth of trees and plants)
            13
Lo! this (Qur’an) is a conclusive word,
            14
            It is no pleasantry.
            15
Lo! they plot a plot (against thee, O Muḥammad)
            16
And I plot a plot (against them).
            17
So give a respite to the disbelievers. Deal thou gently with them for a while.

            CHAP. LXXXVI.
Intitled, The Star which appeared by night; revealed at Mecca.
In the name of the most merciful God.
            1
BY the heaven, and that which appeareth by night:
            2
but what shall cause thee to understand what that which appeareth by night is?
            3
it is the star of piercing brightness
            a
Note [édition originale] : The star of piercing brightness;] Some take the words to signify any bright star, without restriction; but others think some particular star or stars to be thereby intended; which one supposes to be the morning star (peculiarly called al Târek, or the appearing by nights), another Saturn (that planet being by the Arabs surnamed al Thakeb, or the piercing, as it was by the Greeks, Phænon, or the shining), and a third, the Pleiades.
              :
              4
every soul hath a guardian set over it.
              5
Let a man consider, therefore, of what he is created.
              6
He is created of seed poured forth,
              7
issuing from the loins, and the breast-bones
              b
Note [édition originale] : From the loins, and the breast-bones;] i.e. From the loins of the man, and the breast-bones of the woman. 1

              c
Note [édition originale] : Which returneth the rain;] Or, as some expound it, Which performeth its periodic motion, returning to the point from whence it began the same. The words seem designed to express the alternate returns of the different seasons of the year.
                ;
                12
and by the earth which openeth to let forth vegetables and springs:
                13
verily this is a discourse distinguishing good from evil:
                14
and it is not composed with lightness.
                15
Verily the infidels are laying a plot to frustrate my designs:
                16
but I will lay a plot for their ruin.
                17
Wherefore, O prophet, bear with the unbelievers: let them alone a while.

                  Note [édition originale] : REFUTATIONES.
