X
L’étoile (An-Najm)
1
Par l’étoile à son déclin !
2
3
et il ne prononce rien sous l’effet de la passion ;
4
39
et qu’en vérité, l’homme n’obtient que [le fruit] de ses efforts ;
40

1
Par l’étoile quand elle s’abîme !,
2
votre contribule n’est pas égaré ! Il n’erre point.
Note [original edition] : Votre contribule = Mahomet.
    3
Il ne parle pas par propre impulsion.
Note [original edition] : ‛ani l-hawä « par propre impulsion ».
Note [original edition] : Text.
        14
        près du jujubier d’al-Montahā,
Note [original edition] : sidrati l-Muntahä « le jujubier d’al-Montahā ».

Note [original edition] : Le jardin d’al-Ma’wd.

Note [original edition] : Afin qu’Il punisse, etc. Text.
Note [original edition] : Âme pécheresse. Text. : âme obérée.
                      39

Note [original edition] : naḏîrun est équivoque.

                          59
Eh quoi ! de ce discours vous étonnez-vous ?

                          [En] riez-vous et n’[en] pleurez-vous point,
                          61
                          étant insensibles ?

                            62

                            1
By the Star when it plunges,
                            2
your comrade is not astray, neither errs,
                            3
nor speaks he out of caprice.

                            5
taught him by one terrible in power,
                            6
                            very strong; he stood poised,
                            7

                            10
then revealed to his servant that he revealed.
                            11
                            His heart lies not of what he saw;
                            12
what, will you dispute with him what he sees?
                            13
Indeed, he saw him another time
                            14
by the Lote-Tree of the Boundary
                            15
nigh which is the Garden of the Refuge,
                            16
                            when there covered the Lote-Tree that which covered;
                            17
his eye swerved not; nor swept astray.
                            18
Indeed, he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord.
                            19
Have you considered El-Lat and El-‘Uzza
                            20
and Manat the third, the other?
                            21
What, have you males, and He females?
                            22
That were indeed an unjust division.
                            23
They are naught but names yourselves have named, and your fathers; God has sent down no authority touching them. They follow only surmise, and what the souls desire; and yet guidance has come to them from their Lord.
                            24
Or shall man have whatever he fancies?
                            25
And to God belongs the First and the Last.
                            26
How many an angel there is in the heavens whose intercession avails not anything, save after that God gives leave to whomsoever He wills and is well-pleased.
                            27
Those who do not believe in the world to come name the angels with the names of females.
                            28
They have not any knowledge thereof; they follow only surmise, and surmise avails naught against truth.
                            29
So turn thou from him who turns away from Our Remembrance, and desires only the present life.
                            30
That is their attainment of knowledge. Surely thy Lord knows very well those who have gone astray from His way, and He knows very well those who are guided.
                            31
To God belongs whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth, that He may recompense those who do evil for what they have done, and recompense those who have done good with the reward most fair.
                            32
Those who avoid the heinous sins and indecencies, save lesser offences surely thy Lord is wide in His forgiveness. Very well He knows you, when He produced you from the earth, and when you were yet unborn in your mothers’ wombs; therefore hold not yourselves purified; God knows very well him who is godfearing.
                            33
Hast thou considered him who turns his back
                            34
and gives a little, and then grudgingly?
                            35
Does he possess the knowledge of the Unseen, and therefore he sees?
                            36
Or has he not been told of what is in the scrolls of Moses,
                            37
and Abraham, he who paid his debt in full?
                            38
That no soul laden bears the load of another,
                            39
and that a man shall have to his account only as he has laboured,
                            40
and that his labouring shall surely be seen,
                            41
then he shall be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense,
                            42
and that the final end is unto thy Lord,
                            43
and that it is He who makes to laugh, and that makes to weep,
                            44
and that it is He who makes to die, and that makes to live,
                            45
and that He Himself created the two kinds, male and female,
                            46
of a sperm-drop, when it was cast forth,
                            47
and that upon Him rests the second growth,
                            48
and that it is He who gives wealth and riches,
                            49

                            50
and that He destroyed Ad, the ancient,
                            51
and Thamood, and He did not spare them,
                            52
and the people of Noah before -- certainly they did exceeding evil, and were insolent
                            53
and the Subverted City He also overthrew,
                            54
so that there covered it that which covered.
                            55
Then which of thy Lord’s bounties disputest thou?
                            56
This is a warner, of the warners of old.
                            57
                            The Imminent is imminent;
                            58
apart from God none can disclose it.
                            59
Do you then marvel at this discourse,
                            60
and do you laugh, and do you not weep,
                            61
                            while you make merry?
                            62
So bow yourselves before God, and serve Him!

                            27
Lo! it is those who disbelieve in the Hereafter who name the angels with the names of females.
                            28
And they have no knowledge thereof. They follow but a guess, and lo! a guess can never take the place of the truth.
                            29
Then withdraw (O Muḥammad) from him who fleeth from Our remembrance and desireth but the life of the world.
                            30
Such is their sum of knowledge. Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth, and He is Best Aware of him whom goeth right.
                            31
And unto Allah belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth, that He may reward those who do evil with that which they have done, and reward those who do good with goodness.
                            32
Those who avoid enormities of sin and abominations, save the unwilled offences - (for them) lo! thy Lord is of vast mercy. He is Best Aware of you (from the time) when He created you from the earth, and when ye were hidden in the bellies of your mothers. Therefor ascribe not purity unto yourselves. He is Best Aware of him who wardeth off (evil).
                            33
Didst thou (O Muḥammad) observe him who turned away,
                            34
And gave a little, then was grudging?
                            35
Hath he knowledge of the Unseen so that he seeth?
                            36
Or hath he not had news of what is in the books of Moses"
                            37
And Abraham who paid his debt:
                            38
That no laden one shall bear another’s load,
                            39
And that man hath only that for which he maketh effort,
                            40
And that his effort will be seen.
                            41
                            And afterward he will be repaid for it with fullest payment;
                            42
                            And that thy Lord, He is the goal;
                            43
And that He it is who maketh laugh, and maketh weep,
                            44
                            And that He it is Who giveth death and giveth life;

And that He createth the two spouses, the male and the female,
                            46
                            From a drop (of seed) when it is poured forth;
                            47
                            And that He hath ordained the second bringing forth;

                            And that He it is Who enricheth and contenteth;
                            49
                            And that He it is Who is the Lord of Sirius;
                            50
And that He destroyed the former (tribe of) A’ad,
                            51
                            And (the tribe of) Thamud He spared not;
                            52
                            And the folk of Noah aforetime, Lo! they were more unjust and more rebellious;
                            53
                            And Al-Mu’tafikah He destroyed"
                            54
So that there covered them that which did cover.
                            55
Concerning which then, of the bounties of thy Lord, canst thou dispute?
                            56
This is a warner of the warners of old.

                            61

                            62
Rather prostrate yourselves before Allah and serve Him.

Intitled, The Star; revealed at Mecca.
In the name of the most merciful God.

Note [original edition] : He appeared;] In his natural form, in which God created him, and in the eastern part of the sky. It is said that this angel appeared in his proper shape to none of the prophets, except Mohammed, and to him only twice: once when he received the first revelation of the Korân, and a second time when he took his night journey to heaven; as it follows in the text.
                                    7

Note [original edition] : Afterwards he approached;] In a human shape.
                                      , and near unto him;
                                      9
until he was at the distance of two bows length
                                      f
Note [original edition] : Two bows length;] Or, as the word also signifies, two cubits length.
                                        from him, or yet nearer;
                                        10
and he revealed unto his servant that which he revealed.
                                        11
The heart of Mohammed did not falsely represent that which he saw.
                                        12
Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he saw
                                        g
Note [original edition] : The heart of Mohammed did not falsely represent that which he saw;] But he saw it in reality.

Note [original edition] : The lote-tree beyond which there is no passing;] This tree, say the commentators, stands in the seventh heaven, on the right hand of the throne of God; and is the utmost bounds beyond which the angels themselves must not pass; or, as some rather imagine, beyond which no creature’s knowledge can extend.
                                            :

Note [original edition] : When the lote-tree covered that which it covered;] The words seem to signify that what was under this tree exceeded all description and number. Some suppose the whole host of angels worshipping beneath it 1 are intended, and others, the birds which sit on its branches2.

                                              27
Verily they who believe not in the life to come give unto the angels a female appellation.
                                              28
But they have no knowledge herein: they follow no other than a bare opinion; and a bare opinion attaineth not anything of truth.
                                              29
Wherefore withdraw from him who turneth away from our admonition, and seeketh only the present life.
                                              30
This is their highest pitch of knowledge. Verily thy Lord well knoweth him who erreth from his way; and he well knoweth him who is rightly directed.
                                              31
Unto God belongeth whatever is in heaven and earth: that he may reward those who do evil, according to that which they shall have wrought; and may reward those who do well, with the most excellent reward.
                                              32
As to those who avoid great crimes, and heinous sins, and are guilty only of lighter faults; verily thy Lord will be extensive in mercy towards them. He well knew you when he produced you out of the earth, and when ye were embryo’s in your mothers’ wombs: wherefore justify not yourselves: he best knoweth the man who feareth him.
                                              33

Note [original edition] : What thinkest thou of him, &c.] This passage, it is said, was revealed on account of al Walid Ebn al Mogheira, who, following the prophet one day, was reviled by an idolater for leaving the religion of the Koreish, and giving occasion of scandal; to which he answered, that what he did was out of apprehension of the divine vengeance: whereupon the man offered, for a certain sum, to take the guilt of his apostacy on himself; and the bargain being made, al Walid returned to his idolatry, and paid the man part of what had been agreed on; but afterwards, on farther consideration, he thought it too much, and kept back the remainder2.

                                                57
The approaching day of judgment draweth near:
                                                58
there is none who can reveal the exact time of the same, besides God.
                                                59
Do ye, therefore, wonder at this new revelation,
                                                60
and do ye laugh, and not weep,
                                                61
spending your time in idle diversions?
                                                62
But rather worship God, and serve him.

                                                24
                                                26.  An homini erit id, quod desiderat.
                                                25
                                                27.  Atqui Dei est Sæculum novissimum, & primum.
                                                26
Paradisum ).
                                                32
                                                32.  Qui evitant gravia iniquitatis, & flagitiorum, & non committunt, nisi peccata levia : certè Dominus tuus erit illis amplus indulgentia. Ipse erat Scientissimus in vobis (idest optimè vos norat ) cùm produxit vos è terra, & cùm vos essetis embriones in uteris matrum vestrarum.
                                                34
                                                34.  Et dederit pauxillum facultatum suarum  ; & avarè retinuerit reliqua  ?
                                                35
                                                35.   Est ne apud eum scientia Arcani ( idest futuri Sæculi ) itaut ipse videat (idest cognoscat, quid sibi eventurum sit ) ?
                                                36
                                                37
                                                37.  Et Abrahæ, qui complevit præceptum Dei.
                                                38
                                                40
                                                40.  Et quod certè opus ejus mox apparebit.
                                                41
                                                41.  Deindè remunerabitur pro eo remuneratione cumulatissima.
                                                42
                                                43
                                                43.  Et quòd certè ipse ridere facit, & flere facit.
                                                44
                                                44.  Et quòd sanè mortificat, & vivificat.
                                                45
                                                45.  Et quòd certè ipse creat duos conjuges, masculum, & fœminam.
                                                46
                                                46.  Ex spermate cùm seminatum fuerit.
                                                47
                                                48
                                                48.  Et quòd ipse certè ditat, & possidere facit.
                                                49
                                                49.  Et quòd ipse certè est Dominus Caniculæ.
                                                50
                                                50.  Et quòd ipse sanè perdidit Adæos priores.
                                                51
                                                51.  Et Themudęos : & non reliquit ullum ex eis.
                                                52
                                                52.  Et Gentem Noe anteà : quippe ipsi erant iniquissimi, & scelestissimi.
                                                53
                                                53.  Et Urbes subversas diruit (idest Sodomam, &c. ).
                                                54
                                                54.  Et operuit eas id, quod operuit (idest lapides, seu lateres igniti missi è Cœlo super eas ).
                                                55
                                                55.  Quodnam ergo beneficiorum Domini tui, ò homo, revocabis in dubium ?
                                                56
                                                57
                                                57.  Appropinquavit Appropinquans (idest Dies Judicii ).
                                                58
                                                58.  Non est illi præter Deum revelatrix (idest nulla creatura novit punctum ejus præter Deum ).
                                                59
                                                59.  An ergo de hac narratione (idest de Alcorano ) admiramini ?
                                                60
                                                60.  Et ridetis.
                                                61
                                                61.  Et non potiùs fletis.
                                                62
                                                62.  Et vos estis segniter ludentes ? Adorate ergo Deum, & colite.

Circa titulum, & locum Suræ nulla est controversia. In numero versuum non omnes conveniunt, quamvis plerique duos supra sexaginta enumerent. Pręmium Lectoris, erunt عشر حسنات بعدد من صدق بمحمد وحجد به بمكة decem bona juxta numerum tàm eorum, qui crediderunt, quàm eorum, qui credere noluerunt in Mahumetum in Mecca.
                                                I.  Per Stellam. ] Gelal, & Zamchascerius volunt hìc significari الثريا Plejades.
                                                V.  Docuit eum. ] Longa est fabula chimericę hujus revelationis, seu apparitionis, quam breviter innuit Gelal in sua expositione his verbis : علمه اياه ملك شديد القوى دو مرة قوة وشدة او منظر حسن اى جبراييل ع م فاستوى استقر وهو بالافق الاعلى افق الشمس اى عند مطلعها على صورة التي خلق عليها فراءه النبي ص فخر مغشيا عليه وكان قد ساله ان يريه نفسه على صورته التي خلق عليها فواعده فنزل جبراييل ع م في صورة الادميين ثم دنا قرب منه فتدلى Docuit eum revelationem illam Angelus validus viribus, præditus robore, virtute, & fortitudine ; seu pulcher aspectu (idest Gabriel, cui sit pax ) Consedit enim (idest firmus constitit) & erat in horizonte, seu in plaga Cœli, in qua Sol oriebatur in forma, qua creatus fuerat. Viditque eum Propheta Mahumetus, & deliquium passus corruit.
VII.  In horizonte. ] Vox Arabica الافق significat tàm horizontem, quàm partem quamlibet Cœli, vel Mundi : immò, & ipsum Mundum.
IX.  Duorum arcuum. ] Exponunt quidam ذراعين duorum cubitorum.
XV.  Hortus receptaculi. ] Ita appellatur hic hortus, seu Paradisus, quia, ut ait Gelal : تاوى الملايكة او ارواح الشهدا والمتقين recipiuntur in eum Angeli, seu animæ Martyrum, & Piorum.
XVI.  Id, quod operiebat. ] Nimirùm, ut exponit Gelal : من طير وغيره volucres, & alia animalia, quæ super arborem Sedra considebant.
XVIII.  De signis Domini sui maximis.
XXIII.  An erit homini id, quod desiderat  ?]
XLVI.  Dominus Caniculæ. Stella, quæ est à tergo Geminorum, & quæ colebatur tempore Idololatriæ.
XLVII.  Adæos priores. ] Nam, ut notat Gelal, alii fuerunt tempore Hud Prophetæ : alii verò posteriores, tempore Saleh.

                                                  Note [original edition] : REFUTATIONES.
                                                  I. Iterùm propalat Mahumetus stultitiam suam. Asserebant Meccani, illum in errore versari : à Dæmone, vel nebulone aliquo deceptum fuisse : Alcoranum esse cerebri illius figmentum : nullo modo Deum res tam ineptas, atque absurdas ei revelare detulisse. Quid ille ? Unum illud inquiro, utrum Meccani Deum jurantem audierint : an verò Mahumetus solus. Primum dici non potest. Fides igitur hujus Juramenti erat penes Mahumetum : nimirùm ipse de se testimonium perhibebat, nulloque certo, vel probabili argumento utebatur, quo adversariis persuaderetur, verum esse id, quod ipse affirmabat, nullam igitur majorem rationem habebant Meccani credendi, Deum aliquid Mahumeto revelasse, quàm illud idem ipsi jurasse. Hoc verò nihil aliud erat, quàm rudibus illis hominibus illudere.
II.
