Titre tiré du vt. 5. Autre intitulé : tabbat yadâ « ont péri les mains », tiré du vt. 1.
Certaines données traditionnelles font de cette sourate une révélation mekkoise et le premier vt. est alors une malédiction dont l’effet n’interviendra que plus tard. Barth, au contraire, en se fondant sur l’examen grammatical du texte estime que cette révélation est du début de la période médinoise ou postérieure à la mort d’Aboû-Lahab, oncle de Mahomet, survenue vers 624 de J.-C.

THE hands of Abu Laheb shall perish
a
Note [original edition] : The hand of Abu Laheb shall perish;] Abu Laheb was the surname of Abd’al Uzza, one of the sons of Abd’almotalleb, and uncle to Mohammed. He was a most bitter enemy to his nephew, and opposed the establishment of his new religion to the utmost of his power. When that prophet, in obedience to the command he had received to admonish his near relations 1, had called them together, and told them he was a warner sent unto them before a grievous chastisement, Abu Laheb cried out, Mayest thou perish! Hast thou called us together for this? and took up a stone to cast at him. Whereupon this passage was revealed2.
By the hands of Abu Laheb some commentators, by a synecdoche, understand his person; others, by a metonymy, his affairs in general, they being transacted with those members; or his hopes in this world, and the next.

Note [original edition] : His riches shall not profit him;] And accordingly his great possessions, and the rank and esteem in which he lived at Mecca, were of no service to him, nor could protect him against the vengeance of God. Al Beidawi mentions also the loss of his son Otba, who was torn to pieces by a lion in the way to Syria, tho’ surrounded by the whole caravan.

        Quatuor huic Suræ inscriptiones præpositas reperio : Prima est تبت  : Perierunt. Secunda ابي لهب Abi-laheb, seu Abu-laheb in casu recto : & utraque est desumpta ex primo versu. Tertia لهب, Flamma, quæ est in tertio versu. Quarta مسد, Fibræ contortæ caudicis palmæ, in quinto versu. Pręmium Lectori promittit ipse Mahumetus his verbis : من قراء سورة ابي لهب رجوت ان لا يجمع الله بينه وبين ابي لهب في دار واحدة Qui legerit hanc Suram ; spero, quòd Deus non uniet illum cum Abu-laheb in eadem domo.
        I.  Perierunt manus Abu-laheb. ] Occasionem dedit huic Suræ id, quod sequitur ex Gelal : لما دعا ص عمه وقال انّي نذير لكم بين يديّ عذاب شديد قال له عمّه ابو لهب تبَّا لك ألهذا دعوتنا ونزل تبت يدا ابي لهب اى جملته وغبّر عنها باليدين تصف مجازا لان اكثر الافعال تزاول بهما Cùm convocasset Mahumetus populum, dixit eis : Ego comminor vobis magnam pœnam, quam video vobis instare. Quod, cùm audisset Abu-laheb patruus ejus, dixit ei : Dii te perdant : propter hoc ergo advocasti nos ? Tunc revelata fuit Mahumeto hæc Suræ : Perierunt manus Abu-laheb. Posuit autem manus per figuram, pro omnibus rebus ejus : quia manibus omnia fiunt, ac pertractantur.
        IV.  Et Uxor ejus. ] Vocabatur hæc ام جميل , Ommogemil, idest mater pulchri : quemadmodùm Maritus ejus ابو لهب , Abu-laheb, idest Pater flammæ  : quæ videntur potiùs fuisse cognomina, quàm nomina propria. Affirmat autem, hanc cum marito in Gehennam descensuram oneratam ligno, vel sarcina lignorum : quia, ut ait Gelal : تلقى الشوك والسعدان في طريق النبي ص Ponebat in via, per quam transiturus erat Mahumetus, ligna spinosa, & sentiensa  : ut nimirùm incideret pedibus in illa, & vel caderet, vel pungeretur.

          I. Tota hæc Sura Satyra mera est felle scatens, ac veneno contra Abu-laheb, & Uxorem ejus Ommogemil. Hinc agnosci potest, quàm impius, & vindictę cupidus fuerit Mahumetus, qui Patruum suum, & Amitam suam ob levissimas, vel saltem non ita graves injurias acceptas, tàm graviter dilaceret, neque tantummodò temporalia illis damna cum bonorum omnium jactura, sed etiam æternas Gehennæ pœnas imprecetur.                   لما دعا النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قومه وقال: إني نذير لكم بين يدي عذاب شديد، فقال عمه أبو لهب: تبًا لك ألهذا دعوتنا، نزل «تبت» خسرت «يدا أبي لهب» أي جملته وعبر عنها باليدين مجازًا لأن أكثر الأفعال تزاول بهما، وهذه الجملة دعاء «وتبَّ» خسر هو، وهذه خبر كقولهم: أهلكه الله وقد هلك، ولما خوَّفه النبي بالعذاب، فقال: إن كان ابن أخي حقاً فإني أفتدي منه بمالي وولدي نزل: «ما أغنى عنه ماله وما كسب».

                  «ما أَغنى عنه ماله وما كسب» أي وكسبه، أي ولده ما أغنى بمعنى يغني.

                  «سيصلى ناراً ذات لهب» أي تلهب وتوقد فهي مآل تكنيته لتلهب وجهه إشراقاً وحمرة.

                  «وامرأته» عطف على ضمير يصلى سوغه الفصل بالمفعول وصفته وهي أم جميل «حمالة» بالرفع والنصب «الحطب» الشوك والسعدان تلقيه في طريق النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم.

                  «في جيدها» عنقها «حبل من مسد» أي ليف وهذه الجملة حال من حمالة الحطب الذي هو نعت لامرأته أو خبر مبتدأ مقدر.
