Les constellations (Al-Buruj)
1
Par le ciel aux constellations !
2
et par le jour promis !
3

1
Par le ciel renfermant les constellations !
2
par le Jour promis !
Note [édition originale] : Ce vt. suggère à Razi une vingtaine d’interprétations positives ou allégoriques.

Note [édition originale] : ḏâti l-waqûdi « sans cesse alimenté ». Text.
        6
        tandis qu’ils étaient assis autour,
        7
        témoins de ce qu’ils faisaient aux Croyants ;
        8
        20
alors qu’Allah les tient à Sa merci !
Note [édition originale] : Text.

            The Constellations
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
            1
            By heaven of the constellations,
            2
            by the promised day,
            3
by the witness and the witnessed,
            4
slain were the Men of the Pit,
            5
            the fire abounding in fuel,
            6
when they were seated over it
            7
and were themselves witnesses of what they did with the believers.
            8
They took revenge on them only because they believed in the All-mighty, the Al-laudable,
            9
God to whom belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and God is Witness over everything.
            10
Those who persecute the believers, men and women, and then have not repented, there awaits them the chastisement of Gehenna, and there awaits them the chastisement of the burning.
            11
Those who believe, and do righteous deeds, for them await gardens underneath which rivers flow; that is the great triumph.
            12
Surely thy Lord’s assault is terrible.
            13
Surely it is He who originates, and brings again,
            14
and He is the All-forgiving, the All-loving,
            15
Lord of the Throne, the All-glorious,
            16
            Performer of what He desires.
            17
Hast thou received the story of the hosts,
            18
            Pharaoh and Thamood?
            19
Nay, but the unbelievers still cry lies,
            20
and God is behind them, encompassing.
            21
Nay, but it is a glorious Koran,

By the heaven, holding mansions of the stars,
            2
            And by the Promised Day.
            3
And by the witness and that whereunto he beareth testimony,
            4
(Self-)destroyed were the owners of the ditch"
            5
            Of the fuel-fed fire,
            6
            When they sat by it,
            7
And were themselves the witnesses of what they did to the believers.
            8

            9
Him unto Whom belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth; and Allah is of all things the Witness.
            10

            13
Lo! He it is Who produceth, then reproduceth,
            14
And He is the Forgiving, the Loving,
            15
Lord of the Throne of Glory,
            16
            Doer of what He will.
            17
Hath there come unto thee the story of the hosts"
            18
Of Pharaoh and (the tribe of) Thamud?
            19
Nay, but those who disbelieve live in denial"
            20
And Allah, all unseen, surroundeth them.
            21
Nay, but it is a glorious Qur’an.

            CHAP. LXXXV.
Intitled, The Celestial signs; revealed at Mecca.
In the name of the most merciful God.
            1
BY the heaven adorned with signs
            a
Note [édition originale] : Signs;] The original word properly signifies towers, which some interpret of real towers1, wherein it is supposed the angels keep guard 2; and others, of the stars of the first magnitude: but the generality of expositors understand thereby the twelve signs of the zodiac, wherein the planets make their several stations 3

            3
by the witness, and the witnessed
            b
Note [édition originale] : By the witness, and the witnessed.] The meaning of these words is very uncertain, and the explications of the commentators consequently vary. One thinks the witness to be Mohammed, and that which is borne witness of, to be the resurrection, or the professors of the Mohammedan faith; or else that these latter are the witness, and the professors of every other religion, those who will be witnessed against by them. Another supposes the witness to be the guardian angel, and his charge the person witnessed against. Another expounds the words of the day of Arafat, the 9th of Dhu’lhajja, and of the day of slaying the victims, which is the day following, or else of Friday, the day of the weekly assembling of the Mohammedans at their mosques, and of the people who are assembled on those days, &c.4

Note [édition originale] : The contrivers of the pit;] Literally, the lords of the pit. These were the ministers of the persecution raised by Dhu Nowâs, king of Yaman, who was of the Jewish religion, against the inhabitants of Najrân ; for they having embraced Christianity (at that time the true religion, by the confession of Mohammed himself), the bigoted tyrant commanded all those who would not renounce their faith to be cast into a pit, or trench, filled with fire, and there burnt to ashes5. Others, however, tell the story with different circumstances 6.

Verily for those who persecute the true believers of either sex, and afterwards repent not, is prepared the torment of hell; and they shall suffer the pain of burning
              e
Note [édition originale] : They shall suffer the pain of burning;] Which pain, it is said, the persecutors of the Christian martyrs above mentioned felt in this life; the fire bursting forth upon them from the pit, and consuming them7.

Qui legerit Suram Turrium, dabit illi Deus pro numero singulorum dierum Veneris (seu ferię sextæ) & omnium dierum visitationis montis Araphat, quamdiù vixerit in hoc Mundo, decem bona.
                    I.  Per Cęlum habens Turres. ] Intelliguntur hìc juxta Gelalem, & alios communiter nomine Turrium duodecim signa Zodiaci. Sed, ut scribit Jahias : قيل البروج النجوم العظام وقيل هو قصور في السماء quidam volunt, has Turres esse Stellas majores : aliqui verò, esse veras turres, seu palatia in Cœlo.
II.  Et diem promissam. ] Intelligunt communiter diem Resurrectionis.
III.  Et testificantem, & testificatum.
IV.  Occisi sunt. ] Arabicè قتل .
At illi elegerunt mortem. Tunc jussit Rex aperiri foveam, atque igne repleri, in eamque conjectos occidi. Dixit Hasan : fuerunt Socii Foveæ octoginta, partim viri, partim mulieres. Cùmque infideles eos apprehendissent, essoderunt illis foveam in terra, in qua ignem succensum illis ostenderunt. Quamobrem in ignem conjecti comburebantur. Remansit autem mulier una, quæ habebat suum infantulum. Cùm autem hæc timorem ostenderet, dixit ei infantulus. Vade, & ne impiam te ostendas. Tunc illa abiit, & combusta est. Dixit Jahias : Erat hic parvulus, nec unquam anteà locutus fuerat. Dixit Mogiahed : evenit hoc in Nageran. Fertur autem eos, qui foderunt foveam, implentes igne, stetisse supra eam : quamobrem dicitur in Alcorano : Cùm essent supra illam sedentes : & ipsi super id, quod faciebant contra fideles, erant testes ; cùm scilicet eos ignis aspectu terrebant. Sed Deus immisit ignem super eos, & combussit eos, liberavitque Fideles. Notandum hìc obiter, primò, Authorem hunc pro Sociis Foveæ , intelligere Christianos Fideles, qui in fovea illa combusti sunt : cùm Gelal, & alii intelligant infideles, qui foveam fecerunt, & in ea Fideles combusserunt. Secundò, apparere in hac narratione manifestam contradictionem, dùm primò asseritur, Fideles combustos fuisse in fovea : deindè dicitur, Deum misisse ignem super infideles, eosque combussisse : quod, juxta Gelal, fundatur in illis verbis v. 10. & ipsis pęna combustionis, & Fideles liberasse. Tertiò, verba illa Alcorani : اذ هم عليها قعود quæ ego verti : dùm ipsi essent circa eum (idest ignem) sedentes  : exponi hìc ab Authore : dùm ipsi essent super eam (idest foveam) sedentes. Nam particula Arabica على , æquè benè significat supra, ac circa.
XIII.  Et ipse quidem producit, & reducit. Creat homines, & resuscitabit eos in die resurrectionis.
XXI.  Coranus. ] Scribitur Arabicè القران Alcoranus cum articulo : Italicè Il Corano  : & قران Coranus, sine articulo.
XX.  In tabula custodita.

                      Note [édition originale] : REFUTATIONES.
