La lune (Al-Qamar)
1
3
Et ils [le] traitent de mensonge et suivent leurs propres impulsions, or chaque chose arrivera à son terme [et son but].
4
Ils ont pourtant reçu comme nouvelles de quoi les empêcher (du mal) ;
5
19
Nous avons envoyé contre eux un vent violent et glacial, en un jour néfaste et interminable ;
20

    2
    S’ils voient un signe, ils s’écartent disant : « Magie continuelle ! »
    3
Ils crient au mensonge, suivent leurs caprices. Or tout décret est immuable.
    4
    10
    Il implora son Seigneur : « Je suis vaincu. Secours[-moi] ! »
    11
    Nous ouvrîmes alors les portes du ciel à une eau torrentielle ;
    12
Note [édition originale] : Cf. Genèse, XIX, 15, 23-24.
          35

          Facsimile Image Placeholder
Faveur de Notre part ! Ainsi Nous récompensons ceux qui sont reconnaissants.
          36
Note [édition originale] : Nous frappâmes leurs yeux etc. Text.
            [Conclusion.]
            43
Note [édition originale] : Plus forts. Text. : meilleurs.
Note [édition originale] : Ils tourneront le dos.

                The Moon
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
                1
The Hour has drawn nigh: the moon is split.
                2
Yet if they see a sign they turn away, and they say ‘A continuous sorcery!’
                3
They have cried lies, and followed their caprices; but every matter is settled.
                4
And there have come to them such tidings as contain a deterrent --
                5
a Wisdom far-reaching; yet warnings do not avail.
                6
So turn thou away from them. Upon the day when the Caller shall call unto a horrible thing,
                7
abasing their eyes, they shall come forth from the tombs as if they were scattered grasshoppers,
                8
running with outstretched necks to the Caller. The unbelievers shall say, ‘This is a hard day!’
                9
The people of Noah cried lies before them; they cried lies to Our servant, and said, ‘A man possessed!’ And he was rejected.
                10
And so he called unto his Lord, saying, ‘I am vanquished; do Thou succour me!’
                11
Then We opened the gates of heaven unto water torrential,
                12
and made the earth to gush with fountains, and the waters met for a matter decreed.
                13
And We bore him upon a well-planked vessel well-caulked
                14
running before Our eyes-a recompense for him denied.
                15
And We left it for a sign. Is there any that will remember?
                16
How then were My chastisement and My warnings?
                17
Now We have made the Koran easy for Remembrance. Is there any that will remember?
                18
Ad cried lies. How then were My chastisement and My warnings?
                19
We loosed against them a wind clamorous in a day of ill fortune continuous,
                20
plucking up men as if they were stumps of uprooted palm-trees.
                21
How then were My chastisement and My warnings?
                22
Now We have made the Koran easy for Remembrance. Is there any that will remember?
                23
Thamood cried lies to the warnings
                24
and said, ‘What, shall we follow a mortal, one out of ourselves? Then indeed we should be in error and insanity!
                25
Has the Reminder been cast upon him alone among us? Nay, rather he is an impudent liar.’
                26
‘They shall surely know tomorrow who is the impudent liar.
                27
They shall send the She-camel as a trial for them; so watch thou them and keep patience.
                28
And tell them that the water is to be divided between them, each drink for each in turn.
                29
Then they called their comrade, and he took in hand, and hamstrung her.
                30
How then were My chastisement and My warnings?
                31
We loosed against them one Cry, and they were as the wattles of a pen-builder.
                32
Now We have made the Koran easy for Remembrance. Is there any that will remember?
                33
The people of Lot cried lies to the warnings.
                34
We loosed against them a squall of pebbles except the folk of Lot; We delivered them at the dawn --
                35
a blessing from Us; even so We recompense him who is thankful.
                36
He had warned them of Our assault, but they disputed the warnings.
                37
Even his guests they had solicited of him; so We obliterated their eyes, saying, ‘Taste now My chastisement and My warnings!’
                38
In the morning early there came upon them a settled chastisement:
                39
‘Taste now My chastisement and My warnings!’
                40
Now We have made the Koran easy for Remembrance. Is there any that will remember?
                41
The warnings came also to Pharaoh’s folk.
                42
They cried lies to Our signs, all of them, so We seized them with the seizing of One mighty, omnipotent.
                43
What, are your unbelievers better than those? Or have you an immunity in the Scrolls?
                44
Or do they say, ‘We are a congregation that shall be succoured?’
                45
Certainly the host shall be routed, and turn their backs.
                46
Nay, but the Hour is their tryst, and the Hour is very calamitous and bitter.
                47
Surely the sinners are in error and insanity!
                48
The day when they are dragged on their faces into the Fire: ‘Taste now the touch of Sakar!’
                49
Surely We have created everything in measure.
                50
Our commandment is but one word, as the twinkling of an eye.
                51
We have destroyed the likes of you; is there any that will remember?
                52
Every thing that they have done is in the Scrolls,
                53
and everything, great and small, is inscribed.
                54
Surely the godfearing shall dwell amid gardens and a river
                55
in a sure abode, in the presence of a King Omnipotent.

                The Moon
                Revealed at Mecca
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
                1
The hour drew nigh and the moon was rent in twain.
                2
And if they behold a portent they turn away and say: Prolonged illusion.
                3
They denied (the Truth) and followed their own lusts. Yet everything will come to a decision"
                4
And surely there hath come unto them news whereof the purport should deter,
                5
Effective wisdom; but warnings avail not.
                6
So withdraw from them (O Muḥammad) on the day when the Summoner summoneth unto a painful thing.
                7
With downcast eyes, they come forth from the graves as they were locusts spread abroad,
                8
Hastening toward the summoner; the disbelievers say: This is a hard day.
                9
The folk of Noah denied before them, yea, they denied Our slave and said: A madman; and he was repulsed.
                10
So he cried unto his Lord, saying: I am vanquished, so give help.
                11
Then opened We the gates of heaven with pouring water"
                12
And caused the earth to gush forth springs, so that the waters met for a predestined purpose.
                13
And We carried him upon a thing of planks and nails,
                14
That ran (upon the waters) in Our sight, as a reward for him who was rejected.
                15
And verily We left it as a token; but is there any that remembereth?
                16
Then see how (dreadful) was My punishment after My warnings!
                17
And in truth We have made the Qur’an easy to remember; but is there any that remembereth?
                18
(The tribe of) A’ad rejected warnings. Then how (dreadful) was My punishment after My warnings.
                19
Lo! We let loose on them a raging wind on a day of constant calamity,
                20
Sweeping men away as though they were uprooted trunks of palm-trees.
                21
Then see how (dreadful) was My punishment after My warnings!
                22
And in truth We have made the Qur’an easy to remember; but is there any that remembereth?
                23
(The tribe of) Thamud rejected warnings"
                24
For they said; Is it a mortal man, alone among us, that we are to follow? Then indeed we should fall into error and madness.
                25
Hath the remembrance been given unto him alone among us? Nay, but he is a rash liar.
                26
(Unto their warner it was said): To-morrow they will know who is the rash liar.
                27
                Lo! We are sending the she-camel as a test for them; so watch them and have patience;
                28
And inform them that the water is to be shared between (her and) them. Every drinking will be witnessed.
                29
But they call their comrade and he took and hamstrung (her).
                30
Then see how (dreadful) was My punishment after My warnings!
                31
Lo! We sent upon them one Shout, and they became as the dry twigs (rejected by) the builder of a cattle-fold.
                32
And in truth We have made the Qur’an easy to remember; but is there any that remembereth?
                33
The folk of Lot rejected warnings.
                34
Lo! We sent a storm of stones upon them (all) save the family of Lot, whom We rescued in the last watch of the night,
                35
As grace from Us. Thus We reward him who giveth thanks.
                36
And he indeed had warned them of Our blow, but they did doubt the warnings.
                37
They even asked of him his guests for an ill purpose. Then We blinded their eyes (and said): Taste now My punishment after My warnings!
                38
And in truth the punishment decreed befell them early in the morning.
                39
Now taste My punishment after My warnings!
                40
And in truth We have made the Qur’an easy to remember; but is there any that remembereth?
                41
And warnings came in truth unto the house of Pharaoh"
                42
Who denied Our revelations, every one. Therefore We grasped them with the grasp of the Mighty, the Powerful.
                43
Are your disbelievers better than those, or have ye some immunity in the scriptures?
                44
Or say they: We are a host victorious?
                45
The hosts will all be routed and will turn and flee.
                46
Nay, but the Hour (of doom) is their appointed tryst, and the Hour will be more wretched and more bitter (than their earthly failure).
                47
Lo! the guilty are in error and madness.
                48
On the day when they are dragged into the Fire upon their faces (it is said unto them): Feel the touch of hell.
                49
Lo! We have created every thing by measure.
                50
And Our commandment is but one (commandment), as the twinkling of an eye.
                51
And verily We have destroyed your fellows; but is there any that remembereth?
                52
And every thing they did is in the scriptures,
                53
And every small and great thing is recorded.
                54
Lo! the righteous will dwell among gardens and rivers,
                55
Firmly established in the favour of a Mighty King.

                CHAP. LIV.
Intitled, The Moon; revealed at Mecca.
In the name of the most merciful God.
                1
THE hour of judgment approacheth; and the moon hath been split in sunder
                a
Note [édition originale] : The moon hath been split in sunder.] This passage is expounded two different ways. Some imagine the words refer to a famous miracle supposed to have been performed by Mohammed; for it is said that, on the infidels demanding a sign of him, the moon appeared cloven in two1, one part vanishing, and the other remaining; and Ebn Masúd affirmed that he saw mount Harâ interpose between the two sections. Others think the preter tense is here used in the prophetic style for the future, and that the passage should be rendered, The moon shall be split in sunder: for this, they say, is to happen at the resurrection. The former opinion is supported by reading, according to some copies, wakad inshakka ’lkamaro, i.e. since the moon hath already been split in sunder; the splitting of the moon being reckoned by some to be one of the previous signs of the last day2.
                • 1 See a long and fabulous account of this pretended miracle in Gagnier, Vie de Mah. ch. 19.

Note [édition originale] : I am overpowered; wherefore avenge me.] This petition was not preferred by Noah till after he had suffered repeated violence from his people; for it is related that one of them having fallen upon him and almost strangled him, when he came to himself he said, O Lord, forgive them, for they know not what they do 2.

Thamud charged the admonitions of their prophet with falsehood,

The people of Lot charged his preaching with falsehood:

but we sent against them a wind driving a shower of stones, which destroyed them all except the family of Lot; whom we delivered early in the morning,

And Lot had warned them of our severity in chastising; but they doubted of that warning.

                                            24
                                            43
                                            Неверные, которые суть между вами, обретаютца ли лучше прежде их бывших ; обретаете ли им какое вспоможение в писании ;
                                            44
                                            52
                                            все ли добро, или все зло, еже они сотворили ;
                                            53
                                            написано есть истинно :
                                            54

                                            MECCANA :
                                            COMMATUM QUINQUAGINTA QUINQUE.

                                            2

                                            8.  Accurrentes projecta cervice ad Vocantem. Dicent Infideles : Hæc est dies difficilis.
                                            9
                                            9.  Mendacii redarguerunt ante eos (idest Meccanos ) gentes Noe ; mendacii, inquam, redarguerunt ipsum Noe servum nostrum ; & dixerunt : Hic est dæmoniacus. Et cum increpatione rejectus est.

                                            12.  Et erumpere fecimus terram in fontes : itaut occurreret sibi aqua è Cęlo, & è terra, juxta decretum, quod jam statutum fuerat à nobis.
                                            13
                                            13.  Et portavimus eum super arcam constantem tabulis, & compaginamentis.

                                            27
                                            27.  Nos quippe missuri sumus Camelam ad probationem eorum. At tu observa eos, & patienter sustine.
                                            28
                                            29
                                            29.  Advocaverunt ergo socium suum Codar, ut occideret eam  : & apprehendit gladium, & occidit eam.
                                            30
                                            30.  Quomodò verò fuit pœna mea, & comminatio mea !
                                            31
Quippe nos misimus super eos vociferationem unam, & fuerunt veluti materies arida ad stabula instructa.
                                            32
                                            33
                                            32.  Mendacii insimulavit populus Lot prædicationem ejus.
                                            34
                                            33.  Nos verò misimus super eos ventum glareas ejaculantem, quo omnes perierunt præter familiam Lot : liberavimus eos (idest familiam Lot ) in tempore matutino.
                                            35
                                            34.  Per gratiam ex nobis. Ita remuneramus eum, qui gratus fuerit.
                                            36
                                            35.  Et jam quidem comminatus fuerat illis Lot vehementiam nostram in puniendo : at illi disputaverunt inter se de comminatione illius.
                                            37
                                            42
                                            41.  Mendacium confinxerunt in signis nostris omnibus. Quamobrem sustulimus eos sublatione valida, potenti.
                                            43
                                            42.  An Infideles vestri, ò Meccani, meliores sunt, quàm fuerint isti ? An promittitur vobis immunitas ab ira Dei in Sacris voluminibus ?
                                            44
                                            43.  An dicent : Nos sumus congregatio prævalitura contra Mahumetum  ?
                                            45
                                            44.  Mox dissipabitur hæc congregatio, & retrò vertent terga.
                                            46
                                            45.  Atqui Hora (idest Dies Judicii ) est tempus constitutum promissioni eorum (idest pœnæ illis promissæ. ) Et Hora erit calamitosior, & amarior, quàm pœna hujus Sæculi.
                                            47
                                            46.  Certè scelerati sunt in errore in hoc sæculo  : & in igne ardenti erunt in futuro.
                                            48
                                            47.  Die, qua trahentur per ignem super facies suas : & dicetur illis  : Gustate tactum Tartari.
                                            49
                                            48.  Certè nos omnem rem creavimus cum provida dispositione.
                                            50
                                            51
                                            50.  Et jam quidem perdidimus populos similes vobis ; an verò proptereà est ullus commonefactus ?
                                            52
                                            53
                                            52.  Et omne opus parvum, & magnum describendum est in Tabula asservata.
                                            54
                                            53.  Porrò Pii erunt in hortis, & fluminibus.
                                            55
                                            54.  In consessu veritatis. 55.  Apud Regem potentissimum.
                                            Note [édition originale] : NOTÆ.
Inscribitur hæc Sura القمر Luna, quia in primo ejus versu fit mentio de prodigiosa Lunæ scissura, de qua mox dicendum. Aliqui inscribitur اقتربت Appropinquavit, à prima ejusdem versus dictione. Qui legerit Suram Lunæ in omni luce (idest in omni ortu Lunæ, vel Solis) suscitabit eum Deus die Resurrectionis, & habebit faciem similem Lunæ in nocte Lunæ (idest in plenilunio.)
                                            I.  Et scissa est Luna.
III.  Sed omnis res est stabiliter permansura. ] Idest, juxta Moslemorum explicationem, omnis res sive bona, sive mala perseverabit quoad pręmium, vel pęnam cum authoribus suis, sive in Paradiso, sive in Gehenna.
                                            V.  Commonitores.
XIII.  Et compaginamentis. ] Nempè ad tabulas connectendas.
XIV.  In oculis nostris.
XVII.  Facilitavimus Alcoranum ad comminationem. ] Explicat Gelal : سهلناه للحفظ او هياناه للذكر planum, ac facilem fecimus eum, & faciliùs posset custodiri, seu mandari memoriæ : vel, ut meliùs possent homines eo erudiri, & commenefieri. Itaut الذكر duplicem hìc habeat significationem, memoriæ scilicet, & commonitionis.
XIX.  In die infaustitatis perseverantis. ] Vox Arabica مستمر duplicem habet apud Gelalem expositionem دايم الشم perpetuæ, seu perseverantis in infelicitate  : & قوية fortis, seu validæ, nimirùm in calamitate : & infortunio. Posset enim exponi, transeuntis, sensu contrario. Fuit autem dies hæc feria quarta, seu Mercurii, & perseveravit infortunium usque ad feriam quartam sequentem.
XXVII.
Præsens erit illi populus in die suo : & Camela in die suo.

                                                5
                                                remplie de conseils tres-salutaires ; neantmoins les Predicateurs leur ont esté inutilles ;

                                                25
                                                a-t’il esté esleu entre nous pour recevoir seul les inspirations de Dieu ? Au contraire, il est un imposteur ;

                                                31
                                                j’ai lancé le tonnerre contr’eux qui les a rendus secs comme de la paille ;
