Hamidullah révisée, 2000Contexte

Muhammad
1

30
Or, si Nous voulions Nous te les montrerions.

Note [édition originale] : ’aḍalla a‛mâla-hum « Allah frappera de nullité ». Text.

Note [édition originale] : mannan « libération ». Text. : bienfait.

Note [édition originale] : Votre lieu d’agitation etc.

                      Muhammad
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
                      1
Those who disbelieve and bar from God’s way, God will send their works astray.
                      2
But those who believe and do righteous deeds and believe in what is sent down to Muhammad -- and it is the truth from their Lord -- He will acquit them of their evil deeds, and dispose their minds aright.
                      3
That is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood, and those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Even so God strikes their similitudes for men.
                      4
When you meet the unbelievers, smite their necks, then, when you have made wide slaughter among them, tie fast the bonds; then set them free, either by grace or ransom, till the war lays down its loads. So it shall be; and if God had willed, He would have avenged Himself upon them; but that He may try some of you by means of others. And those who are slain in the way of God, He will not send their works astray.
                      5
He will guide them, and dispose their minds aright,
                      6
and He will admit them to Paradise, that He has made known to them.
                      7
O believers, if you help God, He will help you, and confirm your feet.
                      8
But as for the unbelievers, ill chance shall befall them! He will send their works astray.
                      9
That is because they have been averse to what God has sent down, so He has made their works to fail.
                      10
What, have they not journeyed in the land and beheld how was the end of those before them? God destroyed them; the unbelievers shall have the likes thereof.
                      11
That is because God is the Protector of the believers, and that the unbelievers have no protector.
                      12
God shall surely admit those who believe and do righteous deeds into gardens underneath which rivers flow. As for the unbelievers, they take their enjoyment and eat as cattle eat; and the Fire shall be their lodging.
                      13
How many a city that was stronger in might than thy city which has expelled thee have We destroyed! And there was no helper for them.
                      14
What, is he who is upon a clear sign from his Lord like unto such a one unto whom his evil deeds have been decked out fair, and they have followed their caprices?
                      15
This is the similitude of Paradise which the godfearing have been promised: therein are rivers of water unstaling, rivers of milk unchanging in flavour, and rivers of wine -- a delight to the drinkers, rivers, too, of honey purified; and therein for them is every fruit, and forgiveness from their Lord -- Are they as he who dwells forever in the Fire, such as are given to drink boiling water, that tears their bowels asunder?
                      16
And some of them there are give ear to thee, till, when they go forth from thee, they say to those who have been given knowledge, ‘What said he just now?’ Those are they upon whose hearts God has set a seal, and they have followed their caprices.
                      17
But those who are guided aright, them He increases in guidance, and gives them their godfearing.
                      18
Are they looking for aught but the Hour, that it shall come upon them suddenly? Already its tokens have come; so, when it has come to them, how shall they have their Reminder?
                      19
Know thou therefore that there is no god but God, and ask forgiveness for thy sin, and for the believers, men and women. God knows your going to and fro, and your lodging.
                      20
Those who believe say, ‘Why has a sura not been sent down?’ Then, when a clear sura is sent down, and therein fighting is mentioned, thou seest those in whose hearts is sickness looking at thee as one who swoons of death; but better for them would be
                      21
obedience, and words honourable. Then, when the matter is resolved, if they were true to God, it would be better for them.
                      22
If you turned away, would you then haply work corruption in the land, and break your bonds of kin?
                      23
Those are they whom God has cursed, and so made them deaf, and blinded their eyes.
                      24
What, do they not ponder the Koran? Or is it that there are locks upon their hearts?
                      25
Those who have turned back in their traces after the guidance has become clear to them, Satan it was that tempted them, and God respited them.
                      26
That is because they said to those who were averse to what God sent down, ‘We will obey you in some of the affair’ and God knows their secrets.
                      27
How shall it be, when the angels take them, beating their faces and their backs?
                      28
That is because they have followed what angers God, and have been averse to His good pleasure, so He has made their works to fail.
                      29
Or did those in whose hearts is sickness think that God would not bring to light their rancour?
                      30
Did We will, We would show them to thee, then thou wouldst know them by their mark; and thou shalt certainly know them in the twisting of their speech; and God knows your deeds.
                      31
And We shall assuredly try you until We know those of you who struggle and are steadfast, and try your tidings.
                      32
Those who disbelieve and bar from God’s way and make a breach with the Messenger after the guidance has become clear to them, they will nothing hurt God, and He will make their works to fail.
                      33
O believers, obey God, and obey the Messenger, and do not make your own works vain.
                      34
Those who disbelieve and bar from God’s way and then die disbelieving, them God will not forgive.
                      35
So do not faint and call for peace; you shall be the upper ones, and God is with you, and will not deprive you of your works.
                      36
The present life is naught but a sport and a diversion; and if you believe and are godfearing, He will give you your wages, and will not ask of you your goods.
                      37
If He asks you for them, and presses you, you are niggardly, and He brings to light your rancour.
                      38
Ha, there you are; you are called upon to expend in God’s way, and some of you are niggardly. Whoso is niggardly is niggardly only to his own soul. God is the All-sufficient; you are the needy ones. If you turn away, He will substitute another people instead of you, then they will not be your likes."

                      Muḥammad
                      Revealed at Al-Madînah
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
                      1
Those who disbelieve and turn (men) from the way of Allah, He rendereth their actions vain.
                      2
And those who believe and do good works and believe in that which is revealed unto Muḥammad - and it is the truth from their Lord - He riddeth them of their ill-deeds and improveth their state.
                      3
That is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood and because those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus Allah coineth their similitudes for mankind.
                      4
Now when ye meet in battle those who disbelieve, then it is smiting of the necks until, when ye have routed them, then making fast of bonds; and afterward either grace or ransom till the war lay down its burdens. That (is the ordinance). And if Allah willed He could have punished them (without you) but (thus it is ordained) that He may try some of you by means of others. And those who are slain in the way of Allah, He rendereth not their actions vain.
                      5
He will guide them and improve their state,
                      6
And bring them in unto the Garden which He hath made known to them.
                      7
O ye who believe! If ye help Allah, He will help you and will make your foothold firm.
                      8
And those who disbelieve, perdition is for them, and He will make their actions vain.
                      9
That is because they are averse to that which Allah hath revealed, therefor maketh He their actions fruitless.
                      10
Have they not travelled in the land to see the nature of the consequence for those who were before them? Allah wiped them out. And for the disbelievers there will be the like thereof.
                      11
That is because Allah is patron of those who believe, and because the disbelievers have no patron.
                      12
Lo! Allah will cause those who believe and do good works to enter Gardens underneath which rivers flow; while those who disbelieve take their comfort in this life and eat even as the cattle eat, and the Fire is their habitation.
                      13
And how many a township stronger than thy township (O Muḥammad) which hath cast thee out, have We destroyed, and they had no helper!
                      14
Is he who relieth on a clear proof from his Lord like those for whom the evil that they do is beautified while they follow their own lusts?
                      15
A similitude of the Garden which those who keep their duty (to Allah) are promised: Therein are rivers of water unpolluted, and rivers of milk whereof the flavour changeth not, and rivers of wine delicious to the drinkers, and rivers of clear-run honey; therein for them is every kind of fruit, with pardon from their Lord. (Are those who enjoy all this) like those who are immortal in the Fire and are given boiling water to drink so that it teareth their bowels?
                      16
Among them are some who give ear unto thee (Muḥammad) till, when they go forth from thy presence they say unto those who have been given knowledge: What was that he said just now? Those are they whose hearts Allah hath sealed, and they follow their own lusts.
                      17
While as for those who walk aright, He addeth to their guidance, and giveth them their protection (against evil).
                      18
Await they aught save the Hour, that it should come upon them unawares? And the beginnings thereof have already come. But how, when it hath come upon them, can they take their warning?
                      19
So know (O Muḥammad) that there is no Allah save Allah, and ask forgiveness for thy sin and for believing men and believing women. Allah knoweth (both) your place of turmoil and your place of rest.
                      20
And those who believe say: If only a surah were revealed! But when a decisive surah is revealed and war is mentioned therein, thou seest those in whose hearts is a disease looking at thee with the look of men fainting unto death. Therefor woe unto them!
                      21
Obedience and a civil word. Then, when the matter is determined, if they are loyal to Allah it will be well for them.
                      22
Would ye then, if ye were given the command, work corruption in the land and sever your ties of kinship?
                      23
Such are they whom Allah curseth so that He deafeneth them and maketh blind their eyes.
                      24
Will they then not meditate on the Qur’an, or are there locks on the hearts?
                      25
Lo! those who turn back after the guidance hath been manifested unto them, Satan hath seduced them, and He giveth them the rein.
                      26
That is because they say unto those who hate what Allah hath revealed: We will obey you in some matters; and Allah knoweth their secret talk.
                      27
Then how (will it be with them) when the angels gather them, smiting their faces and their backs!
                      28
That will be because they followed that which angereth Allah, and hated that which pleaseth Him. Therefor He hath made their actions vain.
                      29
Or do those in whose hearts is a disease deem that Allah will not bring to light their (secret) hates?
                      30
And if We would, We could show them unto thee (Muḥammad) so that thou shouldst know them surely by their marks. And thou shalt know them by the burden of their talk. And Allah knoweth your deeds.
                      31
And verily We shall try you till We know those of you who strive hard (for the cause of Allah) and the steadfast, and till We test your record.
                      32
Lo! those who disbelieve and turn from the way of Allah and oppose the messenger after the guidance hath been manifested unto them, they hurt Allah not a jot, and He will make their actions fruitless.
                      33
O ye who believe! Obey Allah and obey the messenger, and render not your actions vain.
                      34
Lo! those who disbelieve and turn from the way of Allah and then die disbelievers, Allah surely will not pardon them.
                      35
So do not falter and cry out for peace when ye (will be) the uppermost, and Allah is with you, and He will not grudge (the reward of) your actions.
                      36
The life of the world is but a sport and a pastime. And if ye believe and ward off (evil). He will give you your wages, and will not ask of you your wordly wealth.
                      37
If He should ask it of you and importune you, ye would hoard it, and He would bring to light your (secret) hates.
                      38
Lo! ye are those who are called to spend in the way of Allah, yet among you there are some who hoard. And as for him who hoardeth, he hoardeth only from his soul. And Allah is the Rich, and ye are the poor. And if ye turn away He will exchange you for some other folk, and they will not be the likes of you.

                      CHAP. XLVII.
                      Intitled, Mohammed
                      a
Note [édition originale] : Some entitle this chapter War, which is therein commanded to be vigorously carried on against the enemies of the Mohammedan faith.
                        ; revealed at Medina
                        b
Note [édition originale] : Some suppose the whole to have been revealed at Mecca.
                          .
In the name of the most merciful God.
                          1
God will render of none effect the works of those who believe not, and who turn away men from the way of God:
                          2
but as to those who believe, and work righteousness, and believe in the revelation which hath been sent down unto Mohammed (for it is the truth from their Lord), he will expiate their evil deeds from them, and will dispose their heart aright.
                          3
This will he do, because those who believe not follow vanity, and because those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus God propoundeth unto men their examples.
                          4
When ye encounter the unbelievers, strike off their heads, until ye have made a great slaughter among them; and bind them in bonds; and either give them a free dismission afterwards, or exact a

ransom; until the war shall have laid down its arms
                          a
Note [édition originale] : When ye encounter the unbelievers, strike off their heads, &c.] This law the Hanifites judge to be abrogated, or to relate particularly to the war of Bedr, for the severity here commanded, which was necessary in the beginning of Mohammedism 1, they think too rigorous to be put in practice in its flourishing state. But the Persians and some others hold the command to be still in full force; for, according to them, all the men of full age who are taken in battle are to be slain, unless they embrace the Mohammedan faith; and those who fall into the hands of the Moslems after the battle are not to be slain, but may either be set at liberty gratis or on payment of a certain ransom, or may be exchanged for Mohammedan prisoners, or condemned to slavery, at the pleasure of the Imâm or prince2.

. This shall ye do: Verily if God pleased he could take vengeance on them, without your assistance; but he commandeth you to fight his battles, that he may prove the one of you by the other. And as to those who fight
                          b
Note [édition originale] : Who fight, &c.] Some copies, instead of kâtilu, read kûtilu, according to which latter reading it should be rendered, who are slain, or suffer martyrdom, &c.
in defence of God’s true religion, God will not suffer their works to perish:
                            5
                            he will guide them, and will dispose their heart aright;
                            6
and he will lead them into paradise, of which he hath told them.
                            7
O true believers, if ye assist God, by fighting for his religion, he will assist you against your enemies; and will set your feet fast:
                            8
but as for the infidels, let them perish; and their works shall God render vain.
                            9
This shall befal them, because they have rejected with abhorrence that which God hath revealed: wherefore their works shall become of no avail.
                            10
Do they not travel through the earth, and see what hath been the end of those who were before them? God utterly destroyed them: and the like catastrophe awaiteth the unbelievers.
                            11
This shall come to pass, for that God is the patron of the true believers, and for that the infidels have no protector.
                            12
Verily God will introduce those who believe, and do good works, into gardens beneath which rivers flow: but the unbelievers indulge themselves in pleasures, and eat as beasts eat; and their abode shall be hell fire.
                            13
How many cities were more mighty in strength than thy city which hath expelled thee; yet have we destroyed them, and there was none to help them?
                            14
Shall he therefore, who followeth the plain declaration of his Lord, be as he whose evil works have been dressed up for him by the devil; and who follow their own lusts?
                            15
The description of paradise, which is promised unto the pious: therein are rivers of incorruptible water; and rivers of milk, the taste whereof changeth not; and rivers of wine, pleasant unto those who drink; and rivers of clarified honey: and therein shall they have plenty of all kinds of fruits; and pardon from their Lord. Shall the man for whom these things are prepared, be as he who must dwell forever in hell fire; and will have the boiling water given him to drink, which shall burst their bowels?
                            16
Of the unbelievers there are some who give ear unto thee, until, when they go out from thee, they say, by way of derision, unto those to whom knowledge hath been given

Note [édition originale] : Ask pardon for thy sin;] Tho’ Mohammed here and elsewhere 2 acknowledges himself to be a sinner, yet several Mohammedan doctors pretend he was wholly free from sin, and suppose he is here commanded to ask forgiveness, not that he wanted it, but that he might set an example to his followers: wherefore he used to say of himself, if the tradition be true, I ask pardon of God a hundred times a day 3.

                                    24
                                    имеют ли сердца затверделыя ;
                                    25

                                    SURA XLVII.
                                    BELLUM.
                                    MEDINÆA :
                                    COMMATUM TRIGINTA OCTO.
                                    1
                                    1.  Qui infideles fuerint, & averterint alios à via Dei ; errare faciet Deus opera eorum (idest inutilia reddet ).
                                    2
                                    2.  Qui verò fideles fuerint, & fecerint recta, & crediderint in id, quod demissum fuit super Mahumetum (& ipsum est veritas à Domino eorum) expiabit ab eis mala eorum, & rectificabit intentionem eorum.
                                    3
                                    4
                                    4.  Cùm ego repereritis eos, qui sunt infideles, percussio cervicum (idest percutite cervices eorum ) donec feceritis stragem multam eorum. Tùm roborate vinculum (idest alligate vinculis, & captivos ducite reliquos ).
                                    5
                                    6.  Diriget eos, & rectificabit intentionem eorum.
                                    6
                                    7.  Et introducet eos in Paradisum, quem notificaverat eis.
                                    7
                                    8
                                    9.  Qui verò infideles fuerint, exitium erit eis : & aberrare faciet Deus opera eorum.
                                    9
                                    10
                                    11.  An ergo non peragraverunt terram, & inspexerunt, cujusmodi fuerit cultus eorum, qui fuerunt ante ipsos ? Disperdidit Deus illos. Infidelibus autem conveniunt similitudines ejus (idest similis exitus malus ).
                                    11
                                    12
                                    13.  Profectò Deus introducet eos, qui crediderint, & operati fuerint recta, in hortos, currunt de sub ipsis flumina. Qui verò infideles fuerint, deliciis indulgebunt, & comedent, sicut comedunt pecudes : & ignis erit receptaculum eorum.
                                    13
                                    14.  Quot verò ex urbibus erant valentiores robore, quàm sit Mecca urbs tua, quæ ejecit te : & tamen perdidimus eas : & non fuit adjutor illis ?
                                    14
                                    15.  An ergo, qui fuerit super declarationem à Domino suo (idest, qui illuminatus fuerit à Deo in fide ) erit, sicut ille, cui adornatum fuit malum operis sui (idest, speciosum apparere factum fuerit à Dæmone ) & secuti sunt desideria sua ?
                                    15
                                    16
                                    17
                                    18.  Qui verò directi fuerint, augebit illis Deus directionem, & dabit illis timorem eorum de igne Gehennæ.
                                    18
                                    19.  An verò expectant infideles, nisi Horam, ut superveniat illis repentè ? Jam verò venerunt conditiones (idest signa illius). Quomodò verò erit ipsis, postquam advenerit illis commonitio eorum ? (idest, quomodò poterunt tunc commonefieri, & resipiscere ).
                                    19
                                    20
                                    22
                                    22.  An ergo in promptu fuistis, si descivissetis ab obedientia, ut corrumperetis Terram per latrocinia, & rescinderetis (i. violaretis ) consanguinitates vestras ?
                                    23
                                    23.  Hi sunt, quibus maledixit Deus, & surdos reddidit eos, & excæcavit oculos eorum.
                                    24
                                    24.  An ergo non perpendunt Alcoranum ? An super corda sunt seræ eorum ( idest cordium ) ?
                                    25
                                    25.  Certè, qui retroversi fuerint super terga sua, postquam innotuit eis directio : Satanas adornabit ipsis malum, quod fecerunt, & implebit eos opibus ad eos decipiendos.
                                    26
Obediemus vobis in parte præcepti. At Deus novit secreta eorum.
                                    27
                                    27.  Quomodò ergo se habebunt, cùm morti tradent eos Angeli, & percutient facies eorum, & terga eorum uncis ferreis  ?
                                    28
                                    31
                                    31.  Et quidem tentabimus vos, donec cognoscamus strenuè certantes ex vobis, & constanter sustinentes, & probemus nuncia vestra (idest opera vestra, seu quomodò vos geratis in bello ).
                                    32
                                    32.  Porrò, qui infideles fuerint, & averterint alios à via Dei, & schisma fecerint contra Legatum (idest Mahumetum ) postquam innotuit ipsis directio : non nocebunt Deo quidquam : & ipse vana reddet opera eorum.
                                    33
                                    34
                                    34.  Profectò, qui infideles fuerint, & averterint alios à via Dei : deindè mortui fuerint, & ipsi infideles (idest in infidelitate ) nunquam ignoscet Deus illis.
                                    35

Duplex titulus huic Suræ præfigitur ; alter القتال Bellum  : quia in ea contra Meccanos, & alios infideles bellum indicitur. Alter محمد Mohammad, seu Mahumetus : eo quòd is in secundo versu nominetur.
XVI.  Similitudo Paradisi. ] Quia Mahumetani propriè, & litteraliter tenentur credere ea, quæ in Alcorano de Paradiso dicuntur : ideò Gelal, dictionem مثل quæ propriè similitudinem significat, exponit صفة, Prædicatum, seu Epitheton.
XVII.  Illis, quibus data est scientia.
XX.  Et indulgentiam postula pro delicto tuo. Jam verò Mahumetus hoc fecit : ipse enim dixit de se : Ego sanè indulgentiam peccatorum peto à Deo, centies in singulos dies.
XXVII.

                                      Note [édition originale] : REFUTATIONES.
23. pag. 59. Et quæ suprà notavi in refutatione Suræ 9. Pęnitentia.
II.
IV.
