L’araignée (Al-Ankabut)
1
Alif, Lâm, Mîm.
2

A. L. M.
Note [édition originale] : Sur ces sigles, v. Introd., 144.
    2

Note [édition originale] : man j(â)hada « quiconque mène combat ».
Note [édition originale] : Nous les récompenserons etc.
Note [édition originale] : Allusion à quelques apostats ou à quelques convertis peu constants.
              11

Note [édition originale] : V. Genèse, IX, 28-29 : Noé vécut après le Déluge trois cent cinquante ans.
Recherchez donc votre attribution auprès d’Allah ! Adorez-Le et soyez reconnaissants envers Lui ! Vers Lui vous serez ramenés. »
Note [édition originale] : Vous commettez etc. Text. : vous créez un blasphème.
                    18

Conclusion.]
                          41

Note [édition originale] : Autre sens possible : Allah connaît toute chose qu’ils adorent en dehors de Lui.
                            43
Note [édition originale] : Cf.
Note [édition originale] : al-ḥayawânu « la Vraie Vie ».

Do the people reckon that they will be left to say ‘We believe,’ and will not be tried?
                                      3
We certainly tried those that were before them, and assuredly God knows those who speak truly, and assuredly He knows the liars.
                                      4
Or do they reckon, those who do evil deeds, that they will outstrip Us? Ill they judge!
                                      5
Whoso looks to encounter God, God’s term is coming; He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing.
                                      6
Whosoever struggles, struggles only to his own gain; surely God is All-sufficient nor needs any being.
                                      7
And those who believe, and do righteous deeds, We shall surely acquit them of their evil deeds, and shall recompense them the best of what they were doing.
                                      8
We have charged man, that he be kind to his parents; but if they strive with thee to make thee associate with Me that whereof thou hast no knowledge, then do not obey them; unto Me you shall return, and I shall tell you what you were doing.
                                      9
And those who believe, and do righteous deeds assuredly We shall admit them among the righteous.
                                      10
Some men there are who say, ‘We believe in God,’ but when such a man is hurt in God’s cause, he makes the persecution of men as it were God’s chastisement; then if help comes from thy Lord, he will say ‘We were with you.’ What, does not God know very well what is in the breasts of all beings?
                                      11
God surely knows the believers, and He knows the hypocrites.
                                      12
The unbelievers say to the believers, ‘Follow our path, and let us carry your offences’ yet they cannot carry anything, even of their own offences; they are truly liars.
                                      13
They shall certainly carry their loads, and other loads along with their loads, and upon the Day of Resurrection they shall surely be questioned concerning that they were forging.
                                      14
Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, and he tarried among them a thousand years, all but fifty; so the Flood seized them, while they were evildoers.
                                      15
Yet We delivered him, and those who were in the ship, and appointed it for a sign unto all beings.
                                      16
And Abraham, when he said to his people, ‘Serve God, and fear Him; that is better for you, did you know.
                                      17
You only serve, apart from God, idols and you create a calumny; those you serve, apart from God, have no power to provide for you. So seek after your provision with God, and serve Him, and be thankful to Him; unto Him you shall be returned.
                                      18
‘But if you cry me lies, nations cried lies before you; and it is only for the Messenger to deliver the Manifest Message.’
                                      19
(Have they not seen how God originates creation, then brings it back again? Surely that is an easy matter for God.
                                      20
Say: Journey in the land, then behold how He originated creation; then God causes the second growth to grow; God is powerful over everything,
                                      21
chastising whom He will, and having mercy on whomsoever He will, and unto Him you shall be turned.
                                      22
You are not able to frustrate Him either in the earth or in heaven; and you have not, apart from God, either protector or helper.
                                      23
And those who disbelieve in God’s signs and the encounter with Him -- they despair of My mercy, and there awaits them a painful chastisement.)
                                      24
But the only answer of his people was that they said, ‘Slay him, or burn him!’ Then God delivered him from the fire; surely in that are signs for a people who believe.
                                      25
And he said, ‘You have only taken to yourselves idols, apart from God, as a mark of mutual love between you in the present life; then upon the Day of Resurrection you will deny one another, and you will curse one another, and your refuge will be the Fire, and you will have no helpers.’
                                      26
But Lot believed him; and he said, ‘I will flee to my Lord; He is the All-mighty, the All-wise.’
                                      27
And We gave him Isaac and Jacob, and We appointed the Prophecy and the Book to be among his seed; We gave him his wage in this world, and in the world to come he shall be among the righteous.
                                      28
And Lot, when he said to his people ‘Surely you commit such indecency as never any being in all the world committed before you.
                                      29
What, do you approach men, and cut the way, and commit in your assembly dishonour?’ But the only answer of his people was that they said, ‘Then bring us the chastisement of God, if thou speakest truly.’
                                      30
He said, ‘My Lord, help me against the people that work corruption.’
                                      31
And when Our messengers came to Abraham with the good tidings, they said, ‘We shall destroy the people of this city, for its people are evildoers.’
                                      32
He said, ‘Lot is in it.’ They said, ‘We know very well who is in it; assuredly We shall deliver him and his family, except his wife; she has become of those that tarry.’
                                      33
When that Our messengers came to Lot he was troubled on their account and distressed for them; but they said, ‘Fear not, neither sorrow, for surely we shall deliver thee and thy family, except thy wife; she has become of those that tarry.
                                      34
We shall send down upon the people of this city wrath out of heaven for their ungodliness.’
                                      35
And indeed, We have left thereof a sign, a clear sign? unto a people who understand.
                                      36
And to Midian their brother Shuaib; he said, ‘O my people, serve God, and look you for the Last Day; and do not mischief in the land, working corruption.’
                                      37
But they cried lies to him; so the earthquake seized them, and morning found them in their habitation fallen prostrate.
                                      38
And Ad, and Thamood -- it has become clear to you from their dwelling-places; and Satan decked out fair to them their works, and barred them from the way, though they saw clearly.
                                      39
And Korah, and Pharaoh, and Haman; Moses came to them with the clear signs, but they waxed proud in the earth, yet they outstripped Us not.
                                      40
Each We seized for his sin; and of them against some We loosed a squall of pebbles and some were seized by the Cry, and some We made the earth to swallow, and some We drowned; God would never wrong them, but they wronged themselves.
                                      41
The likeness of those who have taken to them protectors, apart from God, is as the likeness of the spider that takes to itself a house; and surely the frailest of houses is the house of the spider, did they but know.
                                      42
God knows whatever thing they call upon apart from Him; He is the All-mighty, the All-wise.
                                      43
And those similitudes -- We strike them for the people, but none understands them save those who know.
                                      44
God created the heavens and the earth with the truth; surely in that is a sign to the believers.
                                      45
Recite what has been revealed to thee of the Book, and perform the prayer; prayer forbids indecency and dishonour. God’s remembrance is greater; and God knows the things you work.
                                      46
Dispute not with the People of the Book save in the fairer manner, except for those of them that do wrong; and say, ‘We believe in what has been sent down to us, and what has been sent down to you; our God and your God is One, and to Him we have surrendered.’
                                      47
Even so We have sent down to thee the Book. Those to whom We have given the Book believe in it; and some of these believe in it; and none denies Our signs but the unbelievers.
                                      48
Not before this didst thou recite any Book, or inscribe it with thy right hand, for then those who follow falsehood would have doubted.
                                      49
Nay; rather it is signs, clear signs in the breasts of those who have been given knowledge; and none denies Our signs but the evildoers.
                                      50
They say, ‘Why have signs not been gent down upon him from his Lord?’ Say: ‘The signs are only with God, and I am only a plain warner.
                                      51
What, is it not sufficient for them that We have sent down upon thee the Book that is recited to them? Surely in that is a mercy, and a reminder to a people who believe.
                                      52
Say: ‘God suffices as a witness between me and you.’ He knows whatsoever is in the heavens and earth. Those who believe in vanity and disbelieve in God -- those, they are the losers.
                                      53
And they demand of thee to hasten the chastisement! But for a stated term the chastisement would have come upon them; but it shall come upon them suddenly, when they are not aware.
                                      54
They demand of thee to hasten the chastisement! Lo, Gehenna encompasses the unbelievers.
                                      55
Upon the day the chastisement shall overwhelm them from above them and from under their feet, and He shall say, ‘Taste now what you were doing!’
                                      56
O My servants who believe, surely My earth is wide; therefore Me do you serve!
                                      57
Every soul shall taste of death; then unto Us you shall be returned.
                                      58
And those who believe, and do righteous deeds, We shall surely lodge them in lofty chambers of paradise, underneath which rivers flow, therein dwelling forever; and excellent is the wage of those who labour,
                                      59
such men as are patient, and put their trust in their Lord.
                                      60
How many a beast that bears not its own provision, but God provides for it and you! He is the All-hearer, the All-knower.
                                      61
If thou askest them, ‘Who created the heavens and the earth and subjected the sun and the moon?’ they will say, ‘God.’ How then are they perverted?
                                      62
God outspreads and straitens His provision to whomsoever He will of His servants; God has knowledge of everything.
                                      63
If thou askest them, ‘Who sends down out of heaven water, and therewith revives the earth after it is dead?’ they will say, ‘God.’ Say: ‘Praise belongs to God.’ Nay, but most of them have no understanding.
                                      64
This present life is naught but a diversion and a sport; surely the Last Abode is Life, did they but know.
                                      65
When they embark in the ships, they call on God, making their religion sincerely His; but when He has delivered them to the land, they associate others with Him,
                                      66
that they may be ungrateful for what We have given them, and take their enjoyment; they will soon know!
                                      67
Have they not seen that We have appointed a sanctuary secure, while all about them the people are snatched away? What, do they believe in vanity, and do they disbelieve in God’s blessing?
                                      68
And who does greater evil than he who forges against God a lie, or cries lies to the truth when it comes to him? What, is there not in Gehenna a lodging for the unbelievers?
                                      69
But those who struggle in Our cause, surely We shall guide them in Our ways; and God is with the good-doers."

Do men imagine that they will be left (at ease) because they say, We believe, and will not be tested with affliction?
                                      3
Lo! We tested those who were before you. Thus Allah knoweth those who are sincere, and knoweth those who feign.
                                      4
Or do those who do ill-deeds imagine that they can outstrip Us? Evil (for them) is that which they decide.
                                      5
Whoso looketh forward to the meeting with Allah (let him know that) Allah’s reckoning is surely nigh, and He is the Hearer, the Knower.
                                      6
And whosoever striveth, striveth only for himself, for lo! Allah is altogether Independent of (His) creatures.
                                      7
And as for those who believe and do good works, We shall remit from them their evil deeds and shall repay them the best that they did.
                                      8
We have enjoined on man kindness to parents; but if they strive to make thee join with Me that of which thou hast no knowledge, then obey them not. Unto Me is your return and I shall tell you what ye used to do.
                                      9
And as for those who believe and do good works, We verily shall make them enter in among the righteous.
                                      10
Of mankind is he who saith: We believe in Allah, but, if he be made to suffer for the sake of Allah, he mistaketh the persecution of mankind for Allah’s punishment; and then, if victory cometh from thy Lord, will say: Lo! we were with you (all the while). Is not Allah Best Aware of what is in the bosoms of (His) creatures?
                                      11
Verily Allah knoweth those who believe, and verily He knoweth the hypocrites.
                                      12
Those who disbelieve say unto those who believe: Follow our way (of religion) and we verily will bear your sins (for you). They cannot bear aught of their sins. Lo! they verily are liars.
                                      13
But they verily will bear their own loads and other loads beside their own, and they verily will be questioned on the Day of Resurrection concerning that which they invented.
                                      14
And verily we sent Noah (as Our messenger) unto his folk, and he continued with them for a thousand years save fifty years; and the flood engulfed them, for they were wrong-doers.
                                      15
And We rescued him and those with him in the ship, and made of it a portent for the peoples.
                                      16
And Abraham! (Remember) when he said unto his folk: Serve Allah, and keep your duty unto Him; that is better for you if ye did but know.
                                      17
Ye serve instead of Allah only idols, and ye only invent a lie. Lo! those whom ye serve instead of Allah own no provision for you. So seek your provision from Allah, and serve Him, and give thanks unto Him, (for) unto Him ye will be brought back.
                                      18
But if ye deny, then nations have denied before you. The messenger is only to convey (the message) plainly.
                                      19
See they not how Allah produceth creation, then reproduceth it? Lo! for Allah that is easy.
                                      20
Say (O Muḥammad): Travel in the land and see how He originated creation, then Allah bringeth forth the later growth. Lo! Allah is Able to do all things.
                                      21
He punisheth whom He will and showeth mercy unto whom He will, and unto Him ye will be turned.
                                      22
Ye cannot escape (from Him) in the earth or in the sky, and beside Allah there is for you no friend or helper.
                                      23
Those who disbelieve in the revelations of Allah and in (their) Meeting with Him, such have no hope of My mercy. For such there is a painful doom.
                                      24
But the answer of his folk was only that they said: "Kill him" or "Burn him." Then Allah saved him from the Fire. Lo! herein verily are portents for folk who believe.
                                      25
He said: Ye have chosen only idols instead of Allah. The love between you is only in the life of the world. Then on the Day of Resurrection ye will deny each other and curse each other, and your abode will be the Fire, and ye will have no helpers.
                                      26
And Lot believed him, and said: Lo! I am a fugitive unto my Lord. Lo! He, only He, is the Mighty, the Wise.
                                      27
And We bestowed on him Isaac and Jacob, and We established the prophethood and the Scripture among his seed, and We gave him his reward in the world, and lo! in the Hereafter he verily is among the righteous.
                                      28
And Lot! (Remember) when he said unto his folk: Lo! ye commit lewdness such as no creature did before you.
                                      29
For come ye not in unto males, and cut ye not the road (for travellers), and commit ye not abomination in your meetings? But the answer of his folk was only that they said: Bring Allah’s doom upon us if thou art a truthteller!
                                      30
He said: My Lord! Give me victory over folk who work corruption.
                                      31
And when Our messengers brought Abraham the good news, they said: Lo! we are about to destroy the people of that township, for its people are wrong-doers.
                                      32
He said: Lo! Lot is there. They said: We are best aware of who is there. We are to deliver him and his household, all save his wife, who is of those who stay behind.
                                      33
And when Our messengers came unto Lot, he was troubled upon their account, for he could not protect them; but they said: Fear not, nor grieve! Lo! we are to deliver thee and thy household, (all) save thy wife, who is of those who stay behind.
                                      34
Lo! We are about to bring down upon the folk of this township a fury from the sky because they are evil-livers.
                                      35
And verily of that We have left a clear sign for people who have sense.
                                      36
And unto Midian We sent Shu’eyb, their brother. He said: O my people! Serve Allah, and look forward to the Last Day, and do not evil, making mischief, in the earth.
                                      37
But they denied him, and the dreadful earthquake took them, and morning found them prostrate in their dwelling place.
                                      38
And (the tribes of) A’ad and Thamud! (Their fate) is manifest unto you from their (ruined and deserted) dwellings. Satan made their deeds seem fair unto them and so debarred them from the Way, though they were keen observers.
                                      39
And Korah, Pharaoh and Haman! Moses came unto them with clear proofs (of Allah’s Sovereignty), but they were boastful in the land. And they were not winners (in the race).
                                      40
So We took each one in his sin; of them was he on whom We sent a hurricane, and of them was he who was overtaken by the (Awful) Cry, and of them was he whom We caused the earth to swallow, and of them was he whom We drowned. It was not for Allah to wrong them, but they wronged themselves.
                                      41
The likeness of those who choose other patrons than Allah is as the likeness of the spider when she taketh unto herself a house, and lo! the frailest of all houses is the spider’s house, if they but knew.
                                      42
Lo! Allah knoweth what thing they invoke instead of Him. He is the Mighty, the Wise.
                                      43
As for these similitudes, We coin them for mankind, but none will grasp their meaning save the wise.
                                      44
Allah created the heavens and the earth with truth. Lo! therein is indeed a portent for believers.
                                      45
Recite that which hath been inspired in thee of the Scripture, and establish worship. Lo! worship preserveth from lewdness and iniquity, but verily remembrance of Allah is more important. And Allah knoweth what ye do.
                                      46
And argue not with the People of the Scripture unless it be in (a way) that is better, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: We believe in that which hath been revealed unto us and revealed unto you; our Allah and your Allah is One, and unto Him we surrender.
                                      47
In like manner We have revealed unto thee the Scripture, and those unto whom We gave the Scripture aforetime will believe therein; and of these (also) there are some who believe therein. And none deny Our revelations save the disbelievers.
                                      48
And thou (O Muḥammad) wast not a reader of any scripture before it, nor didst thou write it with thy right hand, for then might those have doubted, who follow falsehood.
                                      49
But it is clear revelations in the hearts of those who have been given knowledge, and none deny Our revelations save wrong-doers.
                                      50
And they say: Why are not portents sent down upon him from his Lord? Say: Portents are with Allah only, and I am but a plain warner.
                                      51
Is it not enough for them that We have sent down unto thee the Scripture which is read unto them? Lo! herein verily is mercy, and a reminder for folk who believe.
                                      52
Say (unto them, O Muḥammad): Allah sufficeth for witness between me and you. He knoweth whatsoever is in the heavens and the earth. And those who believe in vanity and disbelieve in Allah, they it is who are the losers.
                                      53
They bid thee hasten on the doom (of Allah). And if a term had not been appointed, the doom would assuredly have come unto them (ere now). And verily it will come upon them suddenly when they perceive not.
                                      54
They bid thee hasten on the doom, when lo! hell verily will encompass the disbelievers"
                                      55
On the day when the doom will overwhelm them from above them and from underneath their feet, and He will say: Taste what ye used to do!
                                      56
O my bondmen who believe! Lo! My earth is spacious. Therefor serve Me only.
                                      57
Every soul will taste of death. Then unto Us ye will be returned.
                                      58
Those who believe and do good works, them verily We shall house in lofty dwellings of the Garden underneath which rivers flow. There they will dwell secure. How sweet the guerdon of the toilers,
                                      59
Who persevere, and put their trust in their Lord!
                                      60
And how many an animal there is that beareth not its own provision! Allah provideth for it and for you. He is the Hearer, the Knower.
                                      61
And if thou wert to ask them: Who created the heavens and the earth, and constrained the sun and the moon (to their appointed work)? they would say: Allah. How then are they turned away?
                                      62
Allah maketh the provision wide for whom He will of His bondmen, and straiteneth it for whom (He will). Lo! Allah is Aware of all things.
                                      63
And if thou wert to ask them: Who causeth water to come down from the sky, and therewith reviveth the earth after its death? they verily would say: Allah. Say: Praise be to Allah! But most of them have no sense.
                                      64
This life of the world is but a pastime and a game. Lo! the home of the Hereafter - that is Life, if they but knew.
                                      65
And when they mount upon the ships they pray to Allah, making their faith pure for Him only, but when He bringeth them safe to land, behold! they ascribe partners (unto Him),
                                      66
That they may disbelieve in that which We have given them, and that they may take their ease. But they will come to know.
                                      67
Have they not seen that We have appointed a sanctuary immune (from violence), while mankind are ravaged all around them? Do they then believe in falsehood and disbelieve in the bounty of Allah?
                                      68
Who doeth greater wrong than he who inventeth a lie concerning Allah, or denieth the truth when it cometh unto him? Is not there a home in hell for disbelievers?
                                      69
As for those who strive in Us, We surely guide them to Our paths, and lo! Allah is with the good.

Note [édition originale] : While they not be proved.] This passage reprehends the impatience of some of the prophet’s companions, under the hardships which they sustained in defence of their religion, and the losses which they suffered from the infidels; representing to them that such trials and afflictions were necessary to distinguish the sincere person from the hypocrite, and the steady from the wavering. Some suppose it to have been occasioned by the death of Mahja, Omar’s slave, killed by an arrow at the battle of Bedr, which was deeply lamented and laid to heart by his wife and parents1.

We heretofore proved those who were before them; for God will surely know them who are sincere, and he will surely know the liars.

Do they who work evil think that they shall prevent us from taking vengeance on them? An ill judgment do they make.
                                              5
Whoso hopeth to meet God, verily God’s appointed time will certainly come; and he both heareth and knoweth.
                                              6
Whoever striveth to promote the true religion, striveth for the advantage of his own soul; for God needeth not any of his creatures:
                                              7
and as to those who believe and work righteousness, we will expiate their evil deeds from them; and we will give them a reward according to the utmost merit of their actions.

We have commanded man to shew kindness towards his parents: but if they endeavor to prevail with thee to associate with me that concerning which thou hast no knowledge, obey them not

Note [édition originale] : If they endeavor to prevail with thee to associate with me that concerning which thou hast no knowledge;] That is, If they endeavour to pervert thee to idolatry. The passage is said to have been revealed on account of Saad Ebn Abi Wakkâs, and his mother Hamna, who, when she heard that her son had embraced Mohammedism, swore that she would neither eat nor drink till he returned to his old religion, and kept her oath for three days2.

                                              9
Those who shall believe, and shall work righteousness, we will surely introduce into paradise, among the upright.
                                              10
There are some men who say, We believe in God: but when such a one is afflicted for God’s sake, he esteemeth the persecution of men to be as grievous as the punishment of God. Yet if success cometh from thy Lord, they say, Verily we are with you. Doth not God well know that which is in the breasts of his creatures?
                                              11
Verily God well knoweth the true believers, and he well knoweth the hypocrites.

Note [édition originale] : Noah tarried his people one thousand years and fifty years;] This is true, if the whole life of Noah be reckoned; and accordingly Abu’lfeda says he was sent to preach in his two hundred and fiftieth year, and that he lived in all nine hundred and fifty: but the text seeming to speak of those years only which he spent in preaching to the wicked antediluvians, the commentators suppose him to have lived much longer. Some say the whole length of his life was a thousand and fifty years; that his mission happened in the fortieth year of his age, and that he lived after the flood sixty years1; and others give different numbers; one, in particular, pretending that Noah lived near sixteen hundred years2.
This circumstance, says al Beidâwi, was mentioned to encourage Mohammed, and to assure him that God, who supported Noah so many years against the opposition and plots of the antediluvian infidels, would not fail to defend him against all attempts of the idolatrous Meccans and their partisans.

                                                  17
Ye only worship idols besides God, and forge a lie. Verily those which ye worship, besides God, are not able to make any provision for you: seek therefore your provision from God; and serve him, and give thanks unto him; unto him shall ye return.
                                                  18
If he charge me with imposture

Note [édition originale] : If ye charge me with imposture;] This seems to be part of Abraham’s speech to his people: but some suppose that God here speaks, by way of apostrophe, first to the Koreish, and afterwards to Mohammed; and that the parenthesis is continued to these words, And the answer of his people was no other, &c. In which case we should have said, If ye charge Mohammed your apostle with imposture, &c.
, verily sundry nations before you likewise charged their prophets with imposture: but public preaching only is incumbent on an apostle.
                                                    19
Do they not see how God produceth creatures, and afterwards restoreth them

Note [édition originale] : Do they not see how God produceth creatures, and afterwards restoreth them?] The infidels are bid to consider how God causeth the fruits of the earth to spring forth, and reneweth them every year, as in the preceding; which is an argument of his power to raise man, whom he created at first, to life again after death, at his own appointed time.
? Verily this is easy with God.
                                                      20
Say, go through the earth, and see how he originally produceth creatures: afterwards will God reproduce another production; for God is almighty.
                                                      21
He will punish whom he pleaseth, and he will have mercy on whom he pleaseth. Before him shall ye be brought at the day of judgment:

and ye shall not escape his reach, either in earth, or in heaven

: neither shall ye have any patron or defender besides God.

And Abraham said, Ye have taken idols, besides God, to cement affection between you in this life: but on the day of resurrection, the one of you shall deny the other, and the one of you shall curse the other; and your abode shall be hell fire, and there shall be none to deliver you.
                                                          26
And Lot believed on him. And Abraham said, Verily I fly from my people, unto the place which my Lord hath commanded me; or he is the mighty, the wise.

                                                                              45

God knoweth that which ye do.
                                                                              46

This verse is generally supposed to have been abrogated by that of the sword; tho’ some think it relates only to those who are in alliance with the Moslems.

                                                                                47

                                                                                48

Mohammed is said to have declared, That whoever flies for the sake of his religion, tho’ he stir but the distance of a span, merits paradise, and shall be the companion of Abraham and of himself1.

                                                                                    9
                                                                                    14
                                                                                    14.  Et jam quidem legavimus Noe ad gentem suam : mansitque cum eis mille annos præter quinquaginta annos (idest nongentos quinquaginta annos ) posteà sustulit eos diluvium ; & ipsi erant iniquè agentes.
                                                                                    15
                                                                                    16
                                                                                    16.  Et commemora Abraham, cùm dixit genti suæ : servite Deo, & timete eum. Hoc erit melius vobis, si scieritis.
                                                                                    17
                                                                                    18
                                                                                    18.  Quodsi mendacii arguatis me, ò Meccani  : jam porrò mendacii arguerunt gentes ante vos Prophetas suos , & non incumbit Legato, nisi prædicatio manifesta.
                                                                                    19
                                                                                    19.  An non viderunt adhuc, quomodò producat Deus creaturam (idest creet homines ?
                                                                                    20
                                                                                    20.  Dic : Peragrate terram, & videte, quomodò produxerit creaturas : deindè Deus producet productionem alteram (idest alias creaturas ) quippe Deus est ad omnem rem potens.
                                                                                    21
                                                                                    21.  Puniet, quem voluerit, & miserebitur, cujus voluerit, & ad eum revoluemini (idest redibitis in die judicii ).
                                                                                    22
                                                                                    22.  Neque vos infirmaturi estis Deum, ne puniat vos in terra, neque in Cęlo : neque erit vobis præter Deum aliquis Patronus, neque adjutor.
                                                                                    23
                                                                                    25
                                                                                    25.  Et dixit illis Abraham  : Profectò accepistis præter Deum Idola cum amore inter vos (idest certantes inter vos de affectu in cultu eorum ) in vita mundana : deindè die resurrectionis negabunt alii vestrum alios, & maledicent alii vestrum aliis, & receptaculum vestrum erit ignis, neque erunt vobis ulli adjutores.
                                                                                    26
                                                                                    26.  Credidit autem illi (nempè Abrahæ ) Lot, & dixit Abraham  : Certè ego transmigraturus sum à gente mea ad Dominum meum (idest ad locum, quem ipse mihi præceperit ) quippe ipse est Præpotens, Sapiens.
                                                                                    27
                                                                                    27.  Et donavimus illi Isaac, & Jacob, & posuimus in progenie ejus Prophetiam, & Librum (idest Pentateuchum, Euangelium, Psalterium, & Alcoranum ) & dedimus ei mercedem suam in hoc mundo, & quidem ipse in futuro sæculo erit ex Probis.
                                                                                    28
                                                                                    28.  Et memento Lot, cùm dixit populo suo : Ergo ne vos sanè perpetratis flagitium, in quo non præivit vos ullus ex omnibus creaturis ?
                                                                                    29
                                                                                    30
                                                                                    30.  Dixit Lot  : Domine mi, adjuva me adversus homines corruptores.
                                                                                    31
                                                                                    32
                                                                                    33
                                                                                    33.  Cùm verò venissent Legati nostri ad Lot, tristatus est propter eos, & angustiatus est propter eos, brachio (idest angustiam sensit in corde, timens, ne Cives consueta eos injuria afficerent ). At illi dixerunt : Ne timeas, neque contristeris : nam nos liberaturi sumus te, & familiam tuam : sed uxor tua erit ex remanentibus in pœna.
                                                                                    34
                                                                                    34.  Nos porrò demissuri sumus super hanc urbem supplicium è Cœlo ob illud, quod flagitiosè operantur.
                                                                                    35
                                                                                    36
                                                                                    36.  Et ad Madianitas misimus fratrem eorum Scioaib, & dixit eis  : O popule meus servite Deo, & expectate diem novissimum, & ne prævaricemini in terra corrumpentes.
                                                                                    37
                                                                                    37.  Sed mendacii incusaverunt eum : quamobrem sustulit eos terræmotus magnus, & inventi sunt mane in habitaculo suo in genua provoluti.
                                                                                    38
                                                                                    39
                                                                                    40
                                                                                    40.  Omnes ergo sustulimus in peccatis eorum.
                                                                                    42
                                                                                    42.  Porrò Deus novit, quid invocent præter ipsum ex rebus : nam ipse est Præpotens, Sapiens.
                                                                                    43
                                                                                    45
                                                                                    45.  Recita id, quod revelatum fuit tibi de libro Alcorani, & persolve orationem ; quippe oratio removet à flagitiis, & illicito : & certè recordatio Dei est res maxima, & Deus scit id, quod facitis.
                                                                                    46
                                                                                    49
                                                                                    49.  Atqui hic Alcoranus habet signa evidentia in pectoribus eorum, qui donati sunt scientia : neque inficiantur signa nostra, nisi iniquè agentes (idest Judæi ).
                                                                                    50
                                                                                    50.  Et dicunt Meccani  : Nisi demissa fuerint super eum signa miraculosa à Domino suo, non credemus ei. Responde : Certè signa sunt penes Deum, & certè ego sum tantummodò Prædicator manifestus.
                                                                                    51
                                                                                    51.  An nondùm sufficit eis, quòd nos miserimus super te librum, ut legatur illis ?
                                                                                    52
                                                                                    55
                                                                                    55.  Die quadam cooperiet eos pœna desuper eos, & de sub pedibus eorum, & dicet illis : Deus. Gustate id, quod fuistis operati.
                                                                                    56
                                                                                    56.  O servi mei, qui crediderunt : certè terra mea est spatiosa : itaque me colite, me.
                                                                                    57
                                                                                    58
                                                                                    58.  Et, qui crediderint, & operati fuerint recta, certè habitare faciemus eos in Paradiso cęnacula, current de sub illis flumina, perpetuò moraturos in eis. Euge merces Operantium.
                                                                                    59
                                                                                    59.  Qui patientes fuerunt, & super Dominum suum innitebantur.
                                                                                    60
                                                                                    61
                                                                                    61.  Et profectò, si interroges eos, quis creaverit Cœlos, & terram, & subegerit servituti hominum Solem, & lunam : certè respondebunt : Deus. Quomodò ergo mentiuntur, dùm colunt alios deos  ?
                                                                                    62
                                                                                    62.  Deus amplum facit proventum, cui vult de servis suis, & coarctat illi : quippe Deus in omni re est sciens.
                                                                                    63
                                                                                    63.  Et certè, si interroges eos : Quis demittit è Cœlo aquam, & vivificat ea terram post mortem ejus ? Sanè respondebunt : Deus. Dic : Laus Deo. Verùm plerique eorum non intelligunt.
                                                                                    64
                                                                                    67
                                                                                    67.  An adhuc non viderunt, quòd nos fecerimus urbem eorum Meccam, asylum securum, cùm diripiantur homines, qui sunt in regionibus circa eos ? An ergo in Vanitatem credunt, & beneficiis Dei sunt ingrati ?
                                                                                    68
Nonne erit in gehenna receptaculum Infidelibus ?
                                                                                    69
                                                                                    Note [édition originale] : NOTÆ.
De numero Versuum non videtur esse controversia.
His, si addas annos quadraginta, qui præcesserunt prædicationem, conficient summam annorum ferè mille sexcentorum. Totam verò vitam Noe facit nongentorum, quinquaginta annorum. In libello, qui inscribitur Ubi interrogatus fueris : Dic mihi, quandiù vixit Noe ? His si trecentos, quinquaginta, quos post diluvium Moyses illum vixisse scribit, fiet summa annorum mille trecentorum, quadraginta. Hinc apparet, quantùm aberraverit à vero Mahumetus in Noe vitam recensendo.
II.
III. Mahumetum fuisse idiotam, ac legendi, scribendique ignarum, qualem Mahumetani faciunt, non pauci negant ; ego tamen ultrò illis concedo. At verò promitti in Pentateuchó Prophetam hujusmodi idiotam, & prorsùs asinum : absolutè nego.
